Nosara's Hot Summer Fiestas

By Irina Guzman

To start off 2012, Nosara's popular Fiestas will begin with the "puerta!" shout, inviting all to come as a family and enjoy another year of the already traditional partying. Coinciding with summertime and vacations, the traditional Fiestas will be held from January 26th to the 30th.

Take note: on the dawn of Thursday, January 26th, firecrackers will announce that the Fiestas in the town of Nosara have begun. In the afternoon, those present will be able to enjoy the bullfights led by the bull riding group, “Los Nosareños” along with the haciendaNueva Reina” and “Miravalles”. In the evening, “Superstar Discomovil” will set the music and get everyone dancing.

On Friday, January 27th, concerts will begin at 4 p.m. on the main stage with the Guanacaste group, “Pikin y la Nueva Sétima”. There will be free admission. If you have a bull riding fever, a "one on one" will be held at 6 p.m. between La Nueva Esperanza and Miravalles haciendas, along with great bulls such as the Trago Amargo, Charito, Gorrita and the Zaragoza and the bull riding group from Santa Cruz, Los Chirimba. In the evening there will be music by Pikin y la Nueva Sétima, who will alternate with Super Star Discomovil.

Get your riding boots, hat and sunscreen ready for Saturday, January 28th, when the great Tope, which will be hosted by Oscar Rey, will start at noon. “This year we expect over 700 horses, the organization has worked very hard to achieve this goal", explained Marcos Avila, President of the Nosara Development Association (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Nosara), who is in charge of organizing the event. Afterwards, the reception will be held at Jose Briski's finca, which is located 800 meters south of La Casona restaurant.

After the Tope, Simba (from Mexico) and the Costa Rican group, Calle 8, will get everyone at the concert area on their feet to rhythms such as Cumbia, Merengue and Salsa.

But the party will not end there; the international concert will continue at 5 p.m. with Los Andes del Peru, who will keep the audience jumping to the rhythm of Andean Cumbia.

With the last rays of sunshine, the bulls will showcase their best jumps during the "Monta a la Tica" done by the bull riding group Las Águilas, along with the Hacienda La Tormenta, with its famous and much-awaited champion bull, “Soldado”. Along with the bull riding event, a trotting horses exhibit will be held, and will also be hosted by Oscar Rey.

The evening will continue with music by Simba and Calle 8, who will delight the audience with their great Cumbia. The admission fee to the evening's events will be between 3,000 to 4,000 colones per person, depending on the artist.

We recommend that you charge your batteries since the party will continue on Sunday, January 29th, with a free concert at 4 p.m. with the international band, Andes del Peru. For those unable to attend their Saturday concert, this will be their last performance so make the most of it!

The bull riding competition will end with the champion bull, “Changai”.  As an entertaining and fun activity for all who attend the last bullfight, the Fiesta's Ugliest King will be chosen and crowned, and will also receive a good prize! The night will end with a colorful fireworks display.

The popular Nosara Fiestas will end on Monday, January 30th, marking the end of a bull riding summer with a bullfight by the hacienda Nueva Reina, followed by the "vuelco y maneo" of ten calves belonging to the hacienda Río Montaña and the milking of three "Cimarrona" cows and the riding of a mare. And for those looking for a good "zarpe", the Discomovil Emociones will please everyone's taste with great music.

Do not miss this unique celebration, which has been held for almost 35 years. There will be delicious traditional food and rides and games for children, in addition to all the free concerts. So come and support the town of Nosara while having a great time!

Following Costa Rican tradition, this year’s town fiesta in Samara was rich in culture and bull riding.
