2013 Nosara Fiestas Mix Old Faves and New Activities

Gearing up for another round of popular fiestas, to be held Tuesday, January 22 to Monday, January 28th, new features have been added to the traditional lineup, according to Marcos Avila, president of the Nosara Integral Development Association. 

This year’s fiestas will kick off on Tuesday, the 22nd with an emphasis on cultural activities, including typical dances and a marimba festival.  On Wednesday, the 23rd, Nicoya’s symphonic orchestra, 25 de Julio, will perform in conjunction with the signing of an agreement of cooperation to initiate a music school in Nosara. The concert will be dedicated to Miguel Angel Peña, general director of the National System of Musical Education (SINEM), and the guest of honor will be Manuel Obregon, minister of culture.

Motocross has also been added to this year’s lineup, and in recognition of Nosara’s25th anniversary as a district, the Committee of Art and Culture has been preparing an expo of the history of Nosara with photos.

7:00 p.m. Bull riding with Los Cowboys Riders and ranches: El Consorcio from Santa Cruz; Rancho Grande from Pozo de Agua de Nicoya; Ganadería Carfisa from Alajuela and Carlos Barrantes with the bull El Pelotita and the smallest rider in Costa Rica: Willy Gomez from Moracia of Nicoya.
9:00 p.m. Dance with Disco Movil

Friday the 25th
4:00 p.m. dance music in the Pilsen pavilion
6:00 p.m. Bull riding with livestock from Hacienda La Nueva Esperanza.  Riding Malacrianza and other bulls like El Cochovi, Monterrey, El Sabalito and El Samuel.
8:00 p.m. Big dance with the coronation of the 2013 festival queen with Disco Movil

Saturday the 26th
5:00 a.m. Happy Diana in the streets of Nosara
11:00 a.m. Registration for the horse parade in Los Arenales, 100 meters east of the ICE office
2:00 p.m. Beginning of the horse parade with musical bands and groups and a masquerade, sponsored by Tamborito
3:00 p.m. Reception for horse riders in the fairground hall and a concert by Mario Montes
6:00 p.m. Bull riding with ranches: Hacienda La Tormenta and Hacienda Los Sueños, presentation of El Kaliman, the tamest riding bull in the country; with Las Aquilas bull riders.
8:00 p.m. Dancing with Simba and Mario Montes

Sunday the 27 th
5:00 a.m. Happy Diana in the streets of Nosara
9:00 a.m. Second date of the Guanacaste Motocross Championship on the fairground track, sponsored by Cerveceria Costa Rica
4:00 p.m. Reggaeton concert with SHELL from Panama
6:00 p.m. Bull riding with Los Populares bull riders and bulls from the ranches of Jesus Porras, Miguel Cortes and Olman Badilla, with presentation of one of the two most famous bulls: El Rompechingos or El Chirvala.  Riding announced by El Cañero.
8:30 p.m. Fireworks show
9:00 p.m. Dance with Disco Movil

Monday the 28th
4:00 p.m. Afternoon of dancing in the Pilsen pavilion
6:00 p.m. Bull riding with five bulls from Finca Ostional and rodeo with calf roping
8:00 p.m. Free dance to close the festivities with Disco Movil

A new burger joint aims to bring the beach to the city of Nicoya, according to owner Janet Park-Brogan, a Canadian who lives in Samara beach.  Bobo’s Burger House opened on December 7th, located 100 meters south of the municipal building.

Garza’s Italian Love Affair

For homemade Italian dishes, check out Sol y Mar restaurant in Garza. Partners Yuri Speca and Chiara Casalegno offer typical Italian dishes with both northern and southern flavours, ranging from familiar pizzas to pasta dishes and grilled or baked fish.

Pacifico Azul’s New Spot

The seafood restaurant Pacifico Azul is now located in Guiones in the space formerly occupied by Honali across from Mini Super Delicias del Mundo.

Costa Brava Opens in Samara

On December 15, Roger Viau of Ottawa, Canada opened a new international bar and restaurant called Costa Brava across from the entrance to Matapalo.  The menu features many American favorites from hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken wings to ribs, filet and top sirloin.  Prices range from 1600 colones ($3.20) for a hot dog to 7100 colones ($14.20) for top sirloin.

Pelada’s Favourite Bar Gets a Facelift

Olga’s Bar, the well-loved local spot in Pelada Beach, has recently undergone a change of ownership.  New owner Mateo Silvan, a French native, reopened Olga’s in early December.  “Everything on the menu is still the same, but we’ve changed our times, so we’re now open for service longer,” he said.  Olga’s is now serving from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily.
