Smooth Jazz Artist Craig Chaquico Plays Nosara
By Fritz Elmedorf

Grammy-nominated guitarist Craig Chaquico dazzled Nosara audiences with lightning speed fretwork and music suitable for tropical breezes, electric sunsets and the elegant setting of L’Aqua Viva.

While it’s been a long time since his arena-rock days touring with Jefferson Starship, Chaquico still exhibited rock star hero postures and blinding fast licks, with phrasings that now puts him on the smooth jazz charts.

His stories behind the music described his transition to acoustic guitar and a spiritual journey with native American traditions that inform many of his pieces, such as Return of the Eagle and Sacred Ground, which he proudly noted had been included in Harley Davidson Road Songs.

Playing a benefit concert at Harbor Reef for the monkey protection work of Nosara Wildlife, his affinity for the natural world came through in his rendition of Songbird, which remains on the Smooth Jazz charts.

Prerecorded backing soundtracks provided a full-band effect, although perhaps denying a more spontaneous or improvisational tone. However, some improvisation was allowed with a new type of computer-programmed electronic harp, called the Beamz, which gave a few audience members the chance to participate in the show.
