Highly successful debut of ‘El Fin’ in Nosara

By Adam Dietrich

A new Costa Rican film which was filmed partly in Nosara, made a very successful debut in Nosara on March 8. Organized by the Voice of Nosara, about 400 people gathered to watch the film ‘El Fin’ projected onto the side of a truck under the stars. Members of the cast and crew were in attendance including director Miguel Gómez, producer Dennis Gómez, and the film’s youngest actress who played the role of the baby, only two months old at the time of filming and from the Playa Pelada area.

Part comedy, part drama and fantasy the film follows the story of two friends, Nico and Carlos. Upon learning that an asteroid will hit the Earth, destroying it in ten hours the two decide to go to Nosara, the only place they’ve known happiness. Along the way they meet interesting characters who join them and discover something about the meaning of their lives. The film was well received and the comedic writing elicited laughs from the audience throughout the film.

Miguel was very pleased with the reaction from Nosarenos. He has a special connection to the area, which explains why he chose to shoot some scenes here. His uncle was the emergency room chief at the Nicoya Hospital and Miguel’s family used to visit him and spend time in Nosara.

Internationally, the critical response to the film has been excellent as well. In October 2011 the film was partially premiered at the Morbid Film Fest of Fantasy and Horror in Mexico. Despite still being a work in progress at the time it did quite well, winning the prize for people’s choice and second overall for the film fest.

Miguel said that he has signed a deal to sell the rights to the film to a small movie company that has links with Universal Studio in December 2011. This leaves the door open for a high budget remake in Hollywood.
