Swiss Recipes Blend with Relaxed Atmosphere at San Juanillo Restaurant

By Adam Dietrich

Just up the road from Nosara about 20km is the small town of San Juanillo and its clear blue harbored beach As winter approaches nice beach days will be fewer and farther between, so these next couple of months could be your last chance to cross the rivers and relax with a nice and generous Swiss lunch at San Juanillo Restaurant.

The drive there is along a stretch of route 160 that allows for periodic vistas of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. The route there goes through the town of Ostional, past beaches and rock breaks and through farm fields.

The actual town of San Juanillo is quite small and centers around a soccer field. Small bars and restaurants ring the field.

While in San Juanillo, a break from the beach with a leisurely lunch at Restaurante Hotel Playas de San Juanillo is a must. The restaurant is run by a Swiss couple named Karin Lang and Roland Locher.  They have run the restaurant for six months now, at the same location where they formerly operated the Buddha Bar.

The restaurant is next to the soccer field and is shaded with a nice patio. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed, perfect for a lazy weekend. The staff also moves at a relaxed pace, so go when you’re not in a rush.

Items on the menu are moderately priced, especially for those used to living with Nosara prices.  Entrées range between 3800-7000 colones ($7.60-14). They offer everything: veggie and meat dishes, seafood, local food, casados and pizza. A veggie pizza is a little over 4000 ($8) and serves two.

One of their specialty items is potato rösti, a Swiss dish that is a wonderful combination of grated potato, bacon and herbs fried together. This dish costs 1500 colones ($3).

Those who haven’t been to San Juanillo should go and enjoy a nice treat while the weather still permits.
