International Film Festival in Samara Was the Best Yet

By Arianna McKinney

International audiences enjoyed a series of foreign films and a cultural interchange during this year’s Ciclo de Cine, held at Intercultura from Monday, June 18 to Thursday, June 21.

On average, about 15 people came to see each evening’s film, sitting back and relaxing in a semicircle in the open-air amphitheater, with the soothing sound of the waves adding to the ambiance.

The films each hailed from a different part of the world, starting with the Cuban comedy Viva Cuba, followed by a French drama titled El Encanto del Erizo, an Argentine comedy Un Cuento Chino and as the grand finale a drama from South America, Tsotsi.

The audiences were also international, with a few Costa Ricans intermingled with people from the United States, Argentina, Germany, Colombia, France, Mexico, Austria and more. After watching each film, organizer Diego Lasso led the audience in a discussion of the film, adding to the cultural interchange.

This is the sixth year that Ciclo de Cine has been held in Samara but this time the audiences were bigger and more engaged in the event, according to Lasso.

Maria Fernanda Galvez, a Colombian who teaches at Intercultura, related that before only about four to six people would come to view the films, making it a very private theater. She said this year was the first time that so many have participated. “It seems super important to me because it’s a door to comprehending the world; it’s a profound theater for reflection,” she commented. She hopes more people from the community will become interested in the international films, noting that although many may not be able to travel to these places, through the movies they can, and those cinematic journeys just might transform their lives and give them new ideas.

Marco Vinicio Barquero, a Tico who came for the second time to the film festival, expressed, “It’s something very interesting. I wish the community could come more.”

On that note, a suggestion was made by the audience to plan a festival of Costa Rican films and Lasso agreed that it would be a good idea.
