Reprimand for Local Buses

•The company’s manager feels ashamed and threatens to fire bus drivers that mistreat passengers

During the public hearing called by ARESEP, which was held on June 8th in Samara, several bus passengers declared their opposition to a raise in the bus fares. Teresa Arriaga explained that the service provided is not accessible for the handicapped, that the buses are filthy and that their tires are dangerously worn out. In addition Didier Medina, from Samara, mentioned that buses have leaks and therefore, passengers must use umbrellas inside in order to avoid getting wet. Sergio Jirón Martínez, from the town of Torito, considers that charging the same fare to those who travel to Estrada is unfair; also, and, since most of the town’s residents are unemployed and broke, they have a difficult time paying for the raise.

 

 

All those present at the hearing and who expressed their viewpoint agreed on one thing: even though the bus fare to Samara is currently set at 780 colones, they are being charged 800 colones for the service and, in addition, bus drivers mistreat, and are disrespectful towards, the passengers.

When asked for his opinion in regards to these comments, the company’s General Manager, Eliécer Rojas Flores, replied that he feels very ashamed and therefore, the day after the hearing, he submitted a letter to all bus drivers notifying them, among other things, that “charging fees above the approved fares is unacceptable and constitutes cause for termination”. He also stated that they must take care of the units and duly report any issues that might arise since “those details reflect on our company’s image”. Finally, he warned the company’s bus drivers that “mistreating the passengers is an extremely serious act that will also be cause for termination”.

In turn, the ARESEP stated in its resolution that “if any shortcomings, abuse or anomalies are detected and these are not corrected, the ARESEP will apply Article 30 of its Law, leading not only to the rejection of future rate increase requests, but also to fines and even the concession’s suspension, after carrying out the corresponding administrative process”.
