Karaoke Dance in Garza to Support Blue Flag Efforts

By Arianna McKinney

Show your talent on the dance floor or with the microphone during a danceable karaoke on Friday, September 14th at 7 p.m. in Barco de Amor in Garza. Admission is free, as the organizers want everyone in the community to be able to enjoy the activity while at the same time collaborating with community efforts to earn the prestigious ecological blue flag for Garza beach.

Sales of drinks and carne asada (grilled meat) will support blue flag efforts.

This is the first year that Garza is participating in the blue flag program, with a five-member committee formed in March active spearheading efforts such as beach cleanups, planting trees, conducting chats in the school and working with schoolchildren to make signs to promote cleanliness and care for the environment.

"All of our efforts are directed toward generating a change in mentality in the people of our community, especially the boys and girls of Garza," explained Marianela Bustamante, a member of the blue flag committee.

The community children are building enthusiasm for the environmental efforts.

The community children are building enthusiasm for the environmental efforts, noted Bustamante, with a group of about ten kids regularly participating in the blue flag activities. However, the committee would love to have more support from private businesses, such as donation of garbage cans. Garza's Integral Development Association has pledged to donate one garbage can, but more are needed.

"We still don't know if we're going to achieve attaining the flag, but we do know that day by day, activity after activity, we make our community a better place and we add a grain of sand to improving the future of the next generations," Bustamante commented.

Other members of the committee are Antonio Carrillo, Emilio Cascante, Laura Brenes and Carlos Sibaja.
