Rodeo in Esperanza organized to improve soccer field
By Emiliana Garcia

The Esperanza South Development Association organized a rodeo on Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th with the goal of collecting funds to pay the costs of the plans for the future community hall, along with defraying the cost of fencing and lighting for the plaza.

To organize the bull ride, “Son Puros Guanacastecos” (They are Pure Guanacastecans), a group of 18 professional riders, was hired. The group includes the Nicoyan rider Juan Carlos Bustos, who rode the infamous bull Malacrianza in the Nosara fiestas in January of 2009. In total, 778 people paid.

“When they say “puerta” (door), the adrenaline stays behind [and] inside [the arena] only the excitement remains.” That’s how 28-year-old José López of Guiones South described the sensation of riding bulls. Bull rider Enrique “Quique” Mendoza, 27, of Nosara center, agreed with López and said that when the ride ends “you feel yummy.”

Mendoza stayed on a bull named “Tajalin” for 7 seconds, which, according to cameraman and bull-riding expert Pilo Álvarez, “is good [because] the maximum is 8 seconds.”

Isidro López, President of the Association, wanted to report to VON the status of the construction of the bridge that crosses the creek behind the school, since many neighbors have been waiting for this bridge for several years. “MOPT (Ministry of Public Works) has completed the ground study and [the ground] didn’t have a good foundation so they inserted 16 pins at depths of 18 meters. Overall, MOPT has now invested 24 million colones.”
