Sixth Recreational Mountain Bike Event Coming to Samara Dec. 9th

By Arianna McKinney

A cyclist rides through the Samara hills.

Mountain bikers will be making a circuit of the beach, trails and streets of Samara on Sunday, December 9th, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Start and finish line is on the beach in front of Intercultura.

The event includes two routes. The short route is about 26 kilometers over mostly flat terrain. The adventurous long route, about 40 kilometers, will take cyclists through mountains, rivers, pastures and mud. Registration is 6000 colones.

The children’s route is about 5 kilometers over flat terrain in Cantarana. Children under 10 can enter for free.

Aside from cycling, the event will also include entertainment such as raffles, food sales and lively music.

Last year more than 280 cyclists, including adults and children from around the province and elsewhere in the country, participated in the event, according to Jose Rolando Baltodano, event organizer, and he expects about 300 this year.

Proceeds and donations will benefit Asociación CREAR, a nonprofit organization that provides educational program for children in Samara and El Torito.

“We are really excited about this opportunity and we hope to have a great turn out and community support, commented Johannah Waite, Development Director for CREAR.
