Triple Crown Surf Comp Coming Back

By Giordano Ciampini

Local surfers and surf-lovers are being put on notice, as the folks at Nosara Tico Surf School are bringing back the Nosara Triple Crown surf contest, starting January 12th in Guiones Beach, and they are searching for sponsors.

“Having a competition like this motivates the local surfers,” said NTSS co-owner Esteban Lopes Paniagua. “It's a lot of fun, everyone really liked it last year. Plus, the community gets involved and all the money raised will go towards the new Guiones Surf Association.”

Lopez hopes that this competition will bring both local and foreign surfers. Since it will span six categories and three surfing locations over the next three months, the returning Nosara Triple Crown will be sure to be a crowd-pleaser, as much as last year's event.

“Last year we had 60 surfers,” said Lopez. “Hopefully this year we'll have more, but in a contest like this, you never know who's going to show up, but we hope to bring some big-name surfers out.”

However, the event still needs sponsorship, and Lopez is offering a lucrative arrangement; Signage, radio spots, and website visibility are all up for grabs to enterprising companies and individuals.

“We're offering publicity,” he said. “This is a national-level competition, and the sponsors will have their company name and logo on the Costa Rican Surf Federation website and broadcast over 979 'Punto Surf' radio channel.”

Lopez stressed that the competition, while in its infancy, is certainly serious about the future of surf here in the Bocas Nosara, even going so far as to create a local surf association in Guiones.

“It's not just an event we're doing just because we can,” said Lopez. “This is something we want to do this year, and next year, and every year so that we can benefit both the community and the surf association.”
