The Beach & Beyond – Rise And Shine 2010
BY Pamela Ellsworth

When the New Year arrives it’s traditional to revisit the highs and lows of the previous year. 2009 gave people in Nosara and the world at large more to contemplate than celebrate. A lot of people lost their heads and then lost their shirts which pulled the rug out from underneath the rest of us. Given the number and intensity of economic disasters combined one could say we’ve been living dangerously, even say we’ve suffered an acute case of collective denial. We’ve inevitably walked the gangplank on the sinking ship of denial and we’re all treading water in the rough seas of reality together. Recovery is on the horizon in 2010 though we may not all be wearing designer shirts.

A life altering experience, or the threat of imminent danger, startles you into acknowledging reality. What you see isn’t the world as you knew it but the world as it really is. With “ eyes wide shut” we’ve ignored truths that had we heeded them we’d still be afloat in calm seas. In our make believe world we believed and were led to believe that we could buy, borrow and supersize our way to bliss. It was a real rush that amounted to zero in our personal wisdom accounts.

Our personal wisdom portfolios for 2010 look robust. The “if’s , and’s or but’s” deposit was substantial and will bankroll future decisions. Rather than indulging ourselves at any cost we’ll consider all the potential risks. The McMansion deposit reminds us that one size doesn’t fit all budgets in spite of the persuasive salesmanship of those who would profit by persuading us otherwise. This was followed by a frantic deposit in the trust department, as in who to trust. Frequent withdrawals here are advisable and will only accrue interest as we build confidence in our ability to make wise decisions ourselves. Compounding that interest will be the revelation that there isn’t always safety in numbers. Millions of McMansions have fallen like houses of cards. Too many people made hasty and uninformed decisions regarding their financial wherewithal and suffered the consequences. Our biggest windfall will be the inestimable value of the self esteem that we earn by thinking for ourselves. You can’t buy, borrow or supersize your way to bliss. To make a dream come true you have to wake up. Rise and shine 2010!

Spanish is the Language of Costa Rica

OPINION – I’d like to introduce myself, I am a Catalonian boy. Catalonia is a Spanish territory, which for over 30 years suffered the repression of the Spanish dictatorship, depriving us of our own language, as much in the social environment as in daily life. It is a town that, following a war and dictatorship, knew to rise up and conserve its culture, customs and language, in spite of everything. More >

Alianza Verde Starts Community Garden

SÁMARA– We decided to beautify the field next to the police department and gathered up all the trash and debris and cleaned up the area. We planted 20 palmeras given to us by Tyrone Jackson and Laura Ellington of Intercultura as well as some plants. Coldwell Banker donated some supplies and one of their workers, Afro, helped us clean up the area. More >

Letter to the Editor – A War Caused by the Water

I could have never imagined that it would occur in my peaceful country, but today we are experiencing a war caused by the water thanks to the current management of the ASADA at Nosara’s American Project. This association is run by foreigners who do not respect Costa Rican Laws and, on the contrary, they show great skepticism and disdain towards the government and the country in which they so comfortably reside.
