Coordination of Private Security and Tourist Police Thwart Robbery

By emiliana garcia

Two men were arrested by Tourist Police on the morning of Saturday, January 22 on suspicion of theft. The joint response of the police along with a private security company, managed to break a string of robberies that had occurred in the “K Section” neighborhood over several weeks.

Caravaca Romero was the man who told the police where they could find the stolen items from the house.
That morning the Tourist Police received a call from the private security company, who informed them of a suspicious vehicle in the area. The officers stopped and searched a blue Hyundai, driven by a man named Aguilar Avila, who, when questioned by police, said he was an informal taxi driver from Nicoya and was leaving some customers in Nosara. After confirming that the vehicle had no criminal record, he was asked to leave the area.

At 5:20 a.m. The officers received notice of a robbery of a house and, after having the report of the robbery, the same private security firm informed them of the presence on the public highway 4-dubious-looking men.

The officer Alvaro Javier Carranza, along with three other officers, was able to apprehend one of the four men, named Caravaca Romero. Despite having given chase, the three other men fled through the mountains.

Romero, who claims to be a mechanic and to live in Esparza told the police where they could find the stolen items: a flat screen television, an electronic piano, credit cards and car keys. Everything was hidden in an abandoned lot 150 meters from the house from which they were stolen. Minutes later, both police and private security workers, found the previously stopped Hyundai. Inside the vehicle were two pairs of shoes covered with mud, a liter of rum and a screwdriver.

The driver of the Hyundai and the man arrested have no criminal record. They were transferred to the Nicoya Court building by OIJ (Juditial Investigation Deparment) agents.

Police found inside the vehicle, two pares of tennis, one bottle of
ron and a a screwdriver.
