Flights take off from new air terminal in Liberia on Thursday

by Oliver Pérez

Good news for those who visit Nosara and Samara via the Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia: new installations are prepared to begin functioning this Thursday, January 12th, at 6:50 in the morning, when the first national flight from Nature Air with touch the runway and inaugurate the new facilities, as announced by Minister of Transportation Francisco Jimenez.

Ten minutes later, many passengers will leave behind the Guanacaste sun on the first international flight of American Airlines, with destination to Miami.

In this way, the consortium Coriport, in charge of the construction of the new terminal delivers to Civil Aviation.  Coriport will continue administering the airport for 20 years, as stipulated by their contract.

The new airport has an area of 23,000 square meters divided in two levels.  Customs, luggage carousels, passengers check-in area, 24 systemized counters, airline offices, a commercial area, administration, medical consultation, VIP lounge and immigration posts are located on the first floor.

It will also include four boarding bridges, comfortable waiting rooms, 24 counters for passenger care and other appropriate facilities for a modern air terminal.

The contruction of this work had a cost of $35 million and will generate earnings of $11.5 million annually for the state, as indicated the Minister Jimenez.

“Taking into account the experience this country has had with concessions, the reception process of the Liberia Airport buildings was carried out with the care that it merits. This country has to make concessioned public works, but experience tells me that the controls and the oversight has to be clear and forceful,” expressed Luis Carlos Araya, Vice Minister of Air Transportation and President of the Technical Council of Civil Aviation.

In agreement with the contract, the structure should have entered into operation by April 25, 2011, but this was prevented by the delay in equipping it. Later it was said that it would be ready by November, but that objective wasn’t achieved either due to “nonconformities” detected by the State.

Finally, on January 12th, the Oduber International Airport will have the installations and the equipment that the businessmen have been requesting for some time, as it will now be able to receive up to 1,500 passengers at a time compared to the 900 that it received.
