Belly Dancing in the Jungle!

By costaspirit.com

A few years ago, I arrived in Costa Rica excited to walk the beach, excited to hear the monkeys in the morning, excited to try my luck on my second hand surf board, which stays stored in a friend’s bodaga and excited to attend yoga classes.

And then one day…

“We want to learn to Belly Dance!” One of my friends says. “Okay, Saturday at ten.” I respond.

The first class was filled with gales of laughter. Five women danced around the jungle studio shaking their hips and shimmying their shoulders. They sounded like twenty.

The next week there were seven women, Gringos and Ticas together strutting like Divas. The shyness had passed and each woman indulged in her freedom of movement.

Week three, the group arrived with even more friends to join in the fun, self expression, celebration and fantasy. Costuming was becoming an important part of the event.

Since I had not brought my hip scarves with me, I had made one out of an old sarong, ripped scrapes from a tee shirt and carefully picked seashells from the beach and attached them. We were goddesses unleashed!

Now, I arrive to the jungle to walk the beach, hear the monkeys, surf on my old surf board, attend yoga classes and to Belly Dance with goddesses.

Why Belly Dance?

As a means of physical expression, belly dancing increases flexibility, enhances co-ordination and is a form of aerobic exercise, releasing endorphins that make us happy. As a means of self expression, this ancient art inspires grace, poise and confidence, boosting self esteem and just plain makes us feel womanly.
