The Solar Village
By Oliver Von der Weid

Tucked away on the property of Blue Spirit in Garza lies a little village powered only by Photovoltaic solar panels. This is composed of 5 wooden houses type “chalet” and one extra building containing the shared bathrooms and laundry room.

The Solar Panels are esthetically displayed in the center of the compound, standing as a modern kind of totem and clearly showing visitors and guests that the houses are powered by clean energy. The power system had to be custom designed in order to achieve 100% solar energy. All the lights, including the fans, are working on 12 Volts, instead of the regular 110 Volts, the light bulbs are LED to reduce the power consumption to a minimum. Each room has only one regular 110V plug located inside a safe where guests can recharge their electric devices such as cameras, laptop or iPod.

The concept of the different houses is simple and efficient. The interior space is furnished with 2 beds and 2 desks and the terrace located at the front of the house has some benches. Communal bathrooms and laundry room recreate the way of life in the past, where inhabitants congregated and gossiped around the village fountain.

But what makes this place unique is the 100% solar electric system.

Everybody is connected to a limited power source, especially at night when the panels are not working anymore and just the batteries are providing energy.

After sunset, the residents have only some hours of lights before the whole village slowly shuts down like a candle burning out. So everyone goes to sleep, naturally rising at sunrise to start another day in paradise.

MONKEY NEWS

DOG ATTACKS – As if the decimation of the Howler Monkeys by electrocution on the uninsulated power lines isn’t enough, dog attacks of these special creatures is unfortunately on the rise. During February, Nosara has seen 5 Howler Monkey fatalities due to dog attacks. With the heat and winds of the Dry Season, the jungle has gotten more brittle – tree limbs will now crack and break off under the weight of the Howlers, especially the mothers with new babies on their backs.
