Nosara DOS ELSTUN Mix Doubles Tennis Tournament

By Peter Unverdorben
Nosara Tennis Club Member

Finalists A with trophy

From February 22nd through the 27th, the Nosara DOS ELSTUN Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament was played on the Nosara Tennis Club Courts, at Flushing Jungle. The Tournament Director (elected under pressure) was Peter Unverdorben.

Good Sportsmanship and great camaraderie made it possible for 28 players to come together for 6 days of fun and sweat in the Sun. Competing as Mixed Doubles Teams for the Club’s trophy and other goodies, donated by the sponsors, the players were paired up into 16 teams by selecting the stronger women players and matching them with the weaker men players.

Team Names, like Slice & Dice, Kiss Our Aces, Lob to Hell, all referring to the game of tennis and its rules & game terminology, were assigned to each team.

By Friday morning, during the first semifinal, we had already seen 16 great matches. In the semis for Group A, Number 5 ranking Team, Lob to Hell, took it to the unseeded team of Surf & Serve and advanced to the Finals. After a fiercely fought two set battle, the Number 2 seed, I Wonna Win, advanced after a great performance over team Game, Sweat, & Match.

After the matches, the players mixed with the spectators for a cold one, discussing all the great points played, having a laugh about various slap shots or the unforced errors, about the great lobs and cross court shots, about the total miss hits and the double faults.

The Finals were played on Saturday afternoon, with a good crowd watching. All the players who had been battling all week and did not make the finals were here as well. Court one, the championship B, was decided in favor of Ed Kornbluh & Peter Unverdorben in two sets. On Court two the championship match got under way at 3:30 pm. Everybody expected to see a very entertaining game, and they were not disappointed. Sam Carver & Rich Burnam took the championship in two sets. Many long rallies were played with all the skills and finesse of a Championship Match. While Jane Marchant and David Tutton played their hearts out, Sam and Rich were just too good a team to be beaten that day. Congratulations to ALL our winner’s – and ALL our Players.
