Earth Day in Nosara: New Face for the Dump

By Jessica Zamora Sheffield

Nosara celebrated a great Earth Day with the participation of nearly a hundred people who managed to give a new face to the area around the dump.

On Saturday April 21, the Nosara Recycling Association organized the event that achieved the following: removed nearly 1,000 bags of garbage (which had been thrown around the landfill over the past 5 years), collected recyclables, planted trees and bushes in decorated tires, and posted signs to encourage people not to litter.

Efforts do not end there. The association is working on putting up a sign with the days and times that the gate will be open, providing workshops on recycling and composting (see box below "Community Leaders"), promoting the importance of paying the garbage bill on time and motivating the whole community to be part of the change.

All these efforts are essential to the success of the Collection Center that will soon enter the construction phase.

The Association will give public thanks to each of the participants. However, we would also like to give thanks here to those businesses who supported the initiative: Ferretería Nosara, Harmony Hotel, LaGarta Lodge, Marlin Bill's, Casa Tucan, Century 21, Del Mar Academy, Nosara Yoga Institute, ASADA de Playas Nosara, ASADA de Nosara, KayaSol, El Punto Surf Shop, Nosara Home Rentals, Constructora Juan Bermudez's, Belca, Farmacia Nosara, Nosara Surf Academy, Campo Alegre, Nosara B&B, Asociación Desarrollo de Nosara, Asociación Cívica de Nosara, Cruz Roja, Grupo de adulto mayor, Comités de Bandera Azul Ecológica.

Thanks Nosara! We should be proud when driving along the road that passes in front of the dump, but more importantly it is the duty of all of us to keep it beautiful.

Community Leaders Receive Waste Management Workshop

More than 30 community leaders participated in the workshop on "Proper Management of Waste" organized by the Kitson Library and the Recycling Association of Nosara on Thursday 19 April.

The workshop was attended by representatives of the Asociación de Desarrollo, ASADA de Nosara, escuela Serapio López Fajardo, jóvenes de la Iglesia Cristiana, club de mayores de la Biblioteca, personal del EBAIS , Fucan, Cen-Cinai, Comité Bandera Azul y Oficina de la Mujer de Nicoya.

Some of the topics taught during the workshop were: the difference between an organic and inorganic waste, the concept of the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, appropriate management of organic waste, effects of burning trash and the importance of paying the bill for garbage collection.

Other than creating awareness and empowering the participants, the workshop's objective was that these people spread the word to family, friends and neighbors.
