Attention Guiones and Pelada: Tsunami Alarm Will Be Tested in May

By Pinar Istek

The Tsunami Alarm located in Lot 111 of Section A below Villa Mango, will be tested on May 26th, 2011 at noon.

There are five sirens for different purposes: general, radioactivity, chemical, water and fire alarms. They will be tested in the same order they are listed. While the General Alarm and the Radioactivity Alarm have the same sound with different intervals, the rest of the alarms all have distinctly varying sounds. Alarms will be tested for at least five minutes each.

The purpose of the test is to find out the aerial coverage of the alarm system. If needed, there will be a second alarm installed at Giardino Tropicale.

Marcel Schaerer, the president of the Nosara Civic Association, said that "Don't be afraid! It is just a technical test to estimate if we have to install a second one."

Around May 10th, an evaluation form will be distributed to the hotels in the area, to be filled out after the tests. It will ask if the alarm was heard and if so, what the strength of it was. Schaerer said that he would also appreciate any feedback from the community.

The installation was completed on April 15, 2011. The alarm system was brought from Switzerland with the efforts of Marcel Schaerer and René Spindler in collaboration with Nosara Civic Association and Costa Rica National Commission of Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention (C.N.E.). Officers from C.N.E. will be present during this test.

Schaerer chose the location to install the alarm tower for its convenience. He said "This location is perfect with free view on three directions," and it already has the power to run the alarm.
