Saddle Up to Benefit Santa Teresita School

By Arianna McKinney
05/08/13

In an effort to fix up the humble school of Santa Teresita of Nosara, the parent school board is organizing a horse ride and a traditional ribbon race on Saturday, May 11, promising an abundance of food, drinks, music and fun.

The reception area will be at the entrance of Santa Teresita, 1 kilometer from the plaza of Nosara toward the high school. Music will begin at 11 a.m. and the ribbon race is scheduled for 1 p.m. This type of race, in which riders aim for targets of little rings hanging from ribbons, originated in Spain and became part of Guanacaste’s traditional culture.

After the ribbon race, at around 3 p.m., participants will head out on a ride down into the riverbed to enjoy the natural beauty, and afterwards there will be a dance in the Santa Teresita community hall.
With funds raised by the equestrian activities, the school board hopes to build a playground for the school’s 70 students and collaborate with the neighborhood committee to create a new entrance to the school through the soccer field. Mark Vincent Valenzuela, president of the school board, explained that currently the school’s entrance is a steep, one-car access road, which presents a danger if a car comes up while students are also walking up.

In addition, Valenzuela, who is an ex-teacher, hopes to have some funds for academic reasons, such as buying a dictionary or a computer for one of the classrooms. “It’s kind of the missed school,” Valenzuela said, comparing the amount of assistance received by other area schools such as Santa Marta and Serapio Lopez.

The horse ride is dedicated to Manuel Barrantes Suarez, the son of the hardware store owner, Alan Barrantes, in honor of the family’s ongoing support of the community. Guests of honor are the school director, Juan Hernandez Perez, and the mayor of Nicoya, Marco Jimenez. Also, the horse group Los Pachangueros and 11 other well-known local horsemen will participate as special guests. With so many participating, Valenzuela hopes the event will be a “big, fun party.”

Admission is 10,000 colones ($20), which includes unlimited food and drinks. People who want to participate in the ride but don’t have a horse can contact Valenzuela in advance about renting a horse at 2682-0659.
