Intercultura Samara School book fair and film festival
"The Crazyness of Life" In Between Book Pages and Movies Screens

By Arianna McKinney

From Monday, July 4, to Friday, July 8, Intercultura in Samara will be hosting free movies each night at 7 p.m. The theme of the fair is La Locura de Vivir (the Craziness of Life).

The theme, according to event organizer Diego Lasso, represents the passion, frenzy and emotion of the characters of the movies, who all in one way or another have lives related to art or to renouncing the norms imposed by society. "These movies eat and breathe life in the abyss of human tragedy, but also on the horizon of the joy of being alive," he expressed.

On Monday, the evening will start with a short documentary called Librería Sin Paredes (Library Without Walls) about Lasso's efforts to encourage reading throughout Costa Rica, along with El Benny, a movie about the life of Cuban singer Benny Moré.

Tuesday, the film will be A la Orilla del Cielo (At the Edge of Heaven), a drama that takes place in Germany and Turkey, in which the desires for freedom of two women, one German and one Turkish, mix between life and death. A widower allows a prostitute to live with him, and the widower's son later travels to Istanbul to meet the prostitute's daughter, who is a political activist.

Documentary by Luciano Capelli about Guanacaste

The feature on Wednesday will be Wilbur Se Quiere Suicidarse (Wilbur Wants to Commit Suicide), a British film about a pessimistic but attractive man who has unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide. He and his brother submerge their sorrows in the books they read and sell at a bookstore.

Thursday's movie is a drama from Argentina titled Resultado del Amor (Result of Love), about a girl who is both a clown and a prostitute with AIDS, regarding some of the best moments of her life and her desire to keep living.

Friday's documentary, Se Quema El Cielo (The Sky is Burning), shows deforestation in Guanacaste and explores efforts to conserve the tropical dry forest (el bosque tropical seco).

The cultural fair will also include the sale of used books and CDs of Central American music at Intercultura Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with economical prices.

The cultural movies and book fair have been hosted at Intercultura since 2005, usually in July and January. Through the years, more than 80 movies have been presented, highlighting cinematic art from Latin America, Europe Africa and Asia.

Stuff To Do Besides Surfing and Yoga

If you are a surfer or a yoga practitioner, Guanacaste, especially Nosara, is a good destination for you to visit. In fact, for an outsider, Nosara and surrounding areas might even look like it is all about nothing but those two activities. Surely, there are other things to do such as zip lining, stand up paddling, horseback riding or kayaking.
