On Friday, June 22, representatives of the Ministry of Health shut down the tables where local artisans have been selling their wares. This is the second time the artisans have been shut down and left wondering where to go or what to do to continue working and supporting their families. 

The first time was in March of 2011, when the mayor and municipal representatives closed down the market that was being operated without a business concession on a beachfront property on the corner across from the police station. After spending months without a stable location to work, several of the artisans were able to get permits from the municipality to sell their wares as “Artesania Ambulante,” meaning they should move around from location to location. 

Oscar Aquilino Baltadano, one of the artisans who received such a permit in late June of 2011, said that the mayor later allowed them to set up tables along the road in front of the school, and that in a meeting at the municipality with the mayor and the Samara Chamber of Tourism on April 16th the mayor promised to later relocate them to another site.
