The Community of Nosara pitches in to make Santa Marta a Blue Flag School

article and photos By Samantha Pollock

School is out on the weekends, but this Saturday August 20 the campus at Santa Marta’s elementary school was alive with a flurry of activity. More than 100 people pitched in to help kick off the school’s ecological transformation. The event was part of the Adopt a Blue Flag School project spearheaded by Del Mar Academy’s Jessica Sheffield who is in charge of the schools ecological initiatives.

Del Mar Academy has partnered with the Nosara Civic Association and the Tourism Chamber of Nosara to help local public schools participate in the Ecological Blue Flag Program- a highly regarded nation-wide eco-label.

In an effort to meet the criteria necessary to receive an Ecological Blue Flag, Saturday’s participants helped to put a fresh coat of paint on the school’s exterior, plant trees, assemble a new swing set, prepare for a herb garden, create a recycling and composting station and much more.

If the public schools in Santa Marta and Los Angeles are awarded the accolade they will be the first public schools in the district to do so. Eventually Sheffield, with the continued support of the community, hopes to reach out to all ten schools in the Nosara region and help them achieve the same goal.
