Two Nosara Areas Known for Drugs Are Getting Attention
• Road Reopened Between Los Arenales and Santa Teresita

By Arianna McKinney

Two areas known as hangouts for drugs and alcohol abuse have been getting extra attention lately: Hollywood and the dirt road between Los Arenales and Santa Teresita known as La Pompom.

Gerardo Aguilar, chief of the Public Force in Nosara, reported that a person known for selling drugs in the Hollywood area recently decided to leave the Nosara area because of pressure from operatives the police have been conducting entering the Hollywood area from behind at night.

In addition, neighbors from Santa Teresita recently collaborated to reopen La Pompom, which was full of logs and overgrown. Marcos Avila, president of the Nosara Development Association, said the 150-meter road has been closed for about 20 years. Nonetheless, he noted that many students use the shortcut to get to the high school, saving about 500 meters of walking. However, the shortcut had become dangerous with the presence of drug users and the possibility of assault. He related that one girl was chased down the road.

Avila indicated that when they cleaned the area, they found plastic strung up in the trees where people gathered to party, as well as empty bottles and beer cans. They cut down the brush so it's no longer easy to hide out in the area, and the police are patrolling the area.

Gravel or sand from the river is still needed since the road becomes muddy and nearly impassable during winter, and Avila said they also plan to install drainage in November.
