Youth Dies in ATV Accident

By Oliver Pérez

Rodrigo Fuentes Marin, 20 years old, tragically passed away Sunday, October 2 in a quad accident in Esperanza, Nosara.

Fuentes was visiting his girlfriend in Nosara for the weekend and decided to get on the quad one last time before returning to San Jose. After only 500 metres Fuentes hit a concrete post and was violently flung from the quad into the structure. The student hit the roadside cement post between the 506 condominium complex and the Dos Loranas market on Route 160 where it runs through Esperanza.

Fuentes, who was a student of Electronic mechanics in San Jose died within an hour of the accident.

According to Red Cross paramedic, Luis Gerardo Ruiz, who transported the young man from the scene of the accident to the Hospital in Nicoya, Fuentes was unconscious upon his arrival to the scene and was bleeding heavily from the nose and ears. Despite the hard blow, Fuentes had strong vital signs and they stayed strong until the ambulance was within 5 kilometers of the medical centre. This is when complications began occurring. Fuentes went into cardiac arrest and the bumpy road to the hospital only contributed to the worsening of his state.

Diego Cruz witnessed the tragic accident. He told VON that he and others believe the quad was not working properly. Before the accident the quad had been moving to ¨wheelies¨in first and second gear. It is believed that Fuentes had not operated all terrain vehicles prior to his visit to Nosara.

Paramedic Ruiz believes that mostly all of these accidents are fatal, “now in this area we can see more accidents because the road is fixed and people run their vehicles faster”
