Samara Earthquake Produced Physical Changes in Active Volcanoes

By Arianna McKinney

Due to increased activity, closure of access to the craters of Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba volcanoes was recommended by the National Seismology Network (RSN) after a study of the giants after the September 5th earthquake, with epicenter in Samara.

Experts of the RSN, made up of the University of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE), indicated that they have reports in worldwide literature of eruptions and changes in active volcanoes after movements of this type.

The RSN study, released on Friday, October 5, explains that for this reason increasing routine visits to the active volcanoes is very important to monitor whether the volcanic systems remain calm or, on the contrary, if they’ve suffered some disturbance due to the seismic movement.

The changes in volcanic activity after an earthquake of this magnitude can register months or even years afterward; therefore detailed volcanic monitoring should continue, the study recommended.
In Arenal volcano, some small shifting was observed in the slopes due to the instability of the rock mass, although greater changes weren’t shown.

Rincon de la Vieja volcano’s very active hot lake is releasing an unusual amount of gas compared to April of 2012, and it has a milky grey color due to the mixture of sediments as well as an increase in temperature (48 °C). In addition, gas activity increased considerably.

The possibility that the energy released by the Samara earthquake of September 5, 2012 could cause more changes has not been ruled out.

Therefore it has been recommended that access to the carters of Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba remain restricted while they continue monitoring all active volcanoes in Costa Rica constantly.
