On Thursday, October 25, the Nosara Integral Development Association (ADIN) submitted an “urgent” request to the Municipality of Nicoya and the National Emergency Commission for intervention on the Nosara-Zaragoza emergency route since “we are incredibly worried that due to climatic conditions we might end up isolated again,” like what happened in November of 2010.

According to the ADIN, the route through Zaragoza has the advantage of not needing bridges, which would permit Nosara residents to enter and exit all year. However, due to the earthquake that took place on September 5th and the recent rains, the roadway isn’t safe due to the danger of landslides. 

On the other hand, access to Nosara by the gravel route 160 is characterized by “the large quantity of rivers and creeks that cross it… and certain sectors exist where the flooding of these riverbeds interrupts the flow of traffic.”

Although access by route 160 is still possible as of Thursday thanks to the recent maintenance work, several creeks could overflow and block traffic, especially for vehicles that don’t have double traction.  

On Saturday, October 20, Vice Mayor of Nicoya Adriana Rodriguez, along with Marcos Avila, ADIN president, conducted an inspection of various creeks and resolved to dredge the creek in the Hollywood neighborhood and the creek known as “Capulina” in the Los Arenales neighborhood. Also the creek in Esperanza called Rempuje will be cleaned completely since it floods not only the route but also the neighboring houses.
