Guiones Hostel Raises Funds For Earthquake Victims

By Giordano Ciampini

Nosara knows it's share of parties, and this past Saturday November 17th Nosara Beach Hostel held a great party with an equally great cause: To gather food and donations for those still feeling the effects of September fifth massive earthquake.

A portion of the people affected by the earthquake were left in a series of predicaments which gave them little, if any, recourse to government disaster-relief services, including funds for reconstruction, daily necessities, among other needs following the destruction of property.

“I heard that people still had problems,” explained Andres Gonzalez Nosara Beach Hostel's owner. “I was talking to Palancho, DJ Black, and he posted that we should do something to help, because people are starting to forget since it was two months ago.”

“I figured that because I was having the one-year anniversary, we'd do something for a good cause, so he took care of all the music and performances, all the show. I was in charge of food, beer and all the rest,” said Gonzalez.

About 150 patrons descended on the hostel's grounds, the cover charge was a food or clothing donation, and drink tickets got you a beer or a mixed drink, with profits going to cover other items needed by the families in the Nosara area.

“There's a huge box with cans, two smaller boxes with shoes and baby-related things, and another big box with rice and beans,” said Gonzalez. “There's probably a tonne,” he laughed. “We collected about a $1000 in food alone.”

Although the door-level haul was impressive, the cash bar was kept flowing throughout the evening, and ended up netting a solid profit of 450.000 colones ($900) which are to be donated to purchasing additional food and other goods for those same families.

Musical performers Watusi, DJ Black, White Abbot, and an authentic Guanacasteco marimba band provided tunes for dance-itchy movers and shakers to get down to, and some great ambience to keep patrons moving even while they were socializing.

“I'm happy, man,” Gonzalez stated confidently. “There were a lot of people so it was really awesome, and it was great that people brought food as well as donations, so I'm very happy. I want to thank everyone, people from Harbour Reef, Frogpad and Gilded Iguana, but there were many others who helped us all. I might have to sit down and make a list of all the people who helped us!”
