Sublime Spirit in Nosara: a Night of Pure Ska and Punk

By Emiliana García
Perro Bravo, a California band led by Mike Happoldt, known as the "fourth member" of Sublime, will be performing on Saturday, December 11, at La Banana Bar/Club.

According to Alejandro Gutiérrez, representative of "Su Papa Production" and coordinator of the event, this Saturday you can expect "a good dose of music ranging from punk to reggae through other genres, with the spirit of Brad Nowell in the air." Nowell, who died in 1996, was the lead singer of the successful and now dissolved band Sublime.

Mike Happoldt, known simply as "Miguel," has a long history in the world of surf punk music. Along with Nowell, Happoldt created the Skunk Records (www.skunk.com) label that between 1992 and 1996, brought out Sublime's three albums. Happoldt also held the title of producer and manager of the band.

The resounding success of the song "Saw Red," with singer Gwen Stefani (youtube video) in 1993, and the classics for all of those who grew up in the 1990’s, "What I Got" (youtube video) and "Wrong Way" (youtube video) and "Wrong Way" give us a fair preview of what the night of December 11 will provide.

Perro Bravo's evening in Nosara marks the beginning of a Costa Rica tour with the Costa Rican band "Ojo de Buey." The bands also will perform December 17 in Jaco and December 18 in San Jose.

The show, sponsored by the shoe brand Cush, will be in the parking lot of La Banana. The sound will be done by Best Sound Company of San Jose and admission is $10. Doors open at 8 pm.
